Anna: During a major incident the alerts arrive faster than anyone can read them, and most of them are describing the same thing.
Greg: Correlation is the work of collapsing that noise into a sequence: what failed, what failed because of it, and in what order.
Anna: The output is a timeline, and that timeline becomes the backbone of the root cause analysis and the basis for future runbooks.
Greg: It's also the part most often done from memory afterwards, which is exactly why it goes wrong.
